There’s really not a more cozy beverage than a hot apple cider. The spicy-sweet scent of cinnamon, clove, and apple wafting off the stove is a kind of nostalgic aromatherapy. In this recipe, we’ve built a spiced apple cider base with three optional add-ons that give it an herbal and boozy kick. We’ve made it with all three, but it tastes incredible on its own and with any combination of the bonus ingredients.
Ginger: With over 700 individual compounds in a piece of ginger, this root is extremely high in antioxidants, an excellent digestive aid and has been used for centuries to address inflammation.
Cinnamon: A carminative spice used around the globe for centuries and used to aid digestion. Loaded with antioxidants, it may also provide anti-inflammatory benefits.
Reishi: Called the “king” of mushrooms, Reishi has been used to support wellness for over 2,000 years in China and Japan. The fruiting bodies of this mushroom contain beta-glucans, which have been studied to support immune health and overall wellness.
2 Cups Organic Apple Cider (unfiltered and unpasteurized for best flavor!)
4 Cinnamon Sticks (save two for garnish)
5 whole cloves
5 thin slices of fresh ginger
Optional add-on ingredients:
2 oz Bourbon
1 teaspoon Reishi powder
1 Mab Tab
Combine cider, cloves, ginger slices, and cinnamon sticks in a small pot. Bring spiced cider just to a simmer over low heat. Cook just below a simmer until flavors develop, about 30 minutes.If using a Mab Tab and/or reishi powder, add to the pot and stir until dissolved. Strain cider through a sieve into two mugs. Add Bourbon and a squeeze of lemon into each mug. Stir and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
