Recovery means something different for everyone. It could be that you’re recovering from an injury or simply that you’re taking care of yourself after a workout. In this series, we talk to people in our community about how they recover—plus, what their fitness routine looks like, when they feel most alive, and more. Next up, Jess Swanton.

Recovery Mab Sticks are for post-workout or whenever your muscles and joints are feeling sore or tight. Each stick is packed with Turmeric, Ginger, and CBG, bringing all over relief for hard working bodies.

It was a cold January day when Jess Swanton, a runner, rider, and avid gardener and landscaper, was airlifted to the hospital after a spooked horse kicked her in the head. A few months later, she had surgery to insert two artificial discs into her neck. Otherwise, she would not have been able to go back to her active lifestyle—and that was not an option. Here, her story:

On exploring homeopathic medicine:

I am a pretty active person, I always have been. But this neck injury wasn’t the first time I’ve dealt with a threat to my ability to move as I want to. A chronic right knee issue and herniated disc that led to back surgery (and daily ibuprofen use) in 2013 sparked my interest in homeopathic medicine. I decided that it was time to take charge of exploring what else I could do for myself.

But this isn’t a story of an overnight recovery. Anytime you go the homeopathic route, it’s not as black and white as taking a pharmaceutical, but the benefits are just as good.

On becoming a vegan:

In 2017, I decided to try a vegan diet based on having a family history of colorectal cancer as well as my own issues with inflammation. With a background in science (I have a degree in microbiology), I combed through the available research and clinical trials as well as watching the influx of documentaries on the subject. Wading into the science on the positive impact on health, the environment and animals I saw it as a “threefer”, something I had to at least try.  I started to really go, ‘Oh my God, okay, I need to pay attention to this.’ Over the period of six to 12 months, aches and pains, and even some early arthritis in my fingers, began to go away. My dentist commented on the absence of plaque on my teeth (as well as no new cavities, something that plagued me in the past).

On leveling up with supplements:

I believe that my diet led to a clean slate that makes it so that taking supplements is even more effective. It’s almost like your body is cleaner, so it’s more able to uptake these other wonderful potions. In particular, while recovering from surgery last April, I took the Recovery Mab Sticks, which have ginger, turmeric, and CBG (from hemp), throughout the day. I would take two to three doses of that, and it definitely kept things in check and helped to control inflammation. Because they’re more targeted, they’re going to help you faster than food’s going to help you. I believe that taking them is what is allowing the shovel and rake back in my hands nearly every morning.

I also experimented with cannabinoids in the form of a CBD cream, but the Mab & Stoke Recovery Cream (which includes hemp-sourced cannabinoid PEA) is so much better. Post-neck surgery, the muscles that are the most impacted are in my neck and upper shoulder area. The Recovery Cream is such a help to calm the muscles and make me more comfortable. Especially now that I am working on our land (every day) the Recovery Cream is so important. My right ear tingles when my muscles are tight and the Recovery Cream takes that away.

Since I’ve started running again post-surgery, I ice my knee afterward (to combat that still-nagging knee pain) and then apply the Recovery Cream. It just completely stopped the swelling around it, and it allowed me to get back out into what I want to do with my life. The Recovery Cream is a game-changer. I’ll also rub it on my hip area and left glute area in the evening before bed and sometimes again in the morning.

On the importance of mindset:

Beyond diet and supplements, a couple other components were critical in my recovery journey. One was finding a holistic doctor to help guide me. Two is all about mindset and your attitude around what your body is capable of. There’s so much information on the gut-brain connection, and also what your thoughts can do for you or do to you. When I wake up in the morning now, I’m like, ‘Okay, I feel good. I have a lot to be thankful for.’

So here I am, five months post-surgery and I feel great. I recently turned 50 and decided that it’s important to look forward to what the next part of my life has in store—and how I can give back to the world, whether it’s as local as working on my land or it extends beyond that. Whatever it is, I’m confident I’ll figure it out.

Pro Tip: The trick to making beans and other vegan foods taste good: Use spices. There are so many spices in the world and many of them are so good for you because they’re also plants.

Pro Tip: In particular, acupuncture helped to realign nerve synapses where my neck is scarred from surgery, alleviating numbness I’d previously felt. In the past, I used acupuncture to help with hormonal fluctuations after having an IUD taken out.

Pro Tip: I worked with a personal trainer who helped me get stronger. The delicate balance there is making sure you find somebody that has enough knowledge about recovery. (Read about how to find the best trainer for you here.)
